After the introduction of MAN 24.350HOCL-N/R double-deck bus to Hong Kong in 1997, another new bus-type was being introduced in January 1998 for trial. The new bus, which is being first seen in Hong Kong, is the MAN 18.260 single-deck bus (Commonly named as NL262/R).
The first MAN NL262/R is owned by the Citybus HK. It was being later fleeted as #1501 and licensed as HP6440. Totally 60 new MAN NL262/R, #1501 - #1560, had been acquired in the first batch. To meet the open of the new Hong Kong (Chek Lap Kok) International Airport, Citybus arranged them to serve on the Airport shuttle bus routes in their early services so as to fully utilize its advantages of large passenger capacity.
Later in 2000, the Citybus and the Discovery Bay Transit acquired 20 and 5 NL262/R into their fleets respectively. The specification of those 20 new buses for Citybus are similar to that of the previous 60 NL262/R, however, the 5 new buses for the Discovery Bay Transit are fitted with only single doorway for both entrance and exit.
