Dennis Trident prototype for Hong Kong

The first batch of ultra low floor double-deck buses have been developed by Dennis Specialist Vehicles, a bus builder in UK, in the early 1997. In the mean time, the two bus body builders, the Walter Alexander and the Duple Metsec, announced that they will provide a new type of bodywork for the Dennis ultra low floor double-deck bus. That are the Walter Alexander ALX500 and the Duple Metsec DM5000 which are being well-known nowadays.

In the latter part of 1996, the first six prototypes of Dennis Trident 12-metre were sent to the two bus-body builders immediately after the chassis built. The first Trident (#10101) built with the R-type bodywork from Walter Alexander. It did not applied the ALX500 bodywork which is newly designed specially on the Dennis Trident. The bus was then stayed in UK for testing after assembled with bodywork.

The next two Trident were also sent to Walter Alexander for building the new ALX500 bodywork, the bus owner is the Kowloon Motor Bus. The first Trident finished the assembly (#10103) was also stayed in UK for a year in order to perform a series of tests by Walter Alexander. The another one (#10102) was delivered to Hong Kong in May 26, 1997 and being the first Trident serving in Hong Kong since November 26, 1997.

The another three Trident prototype from Dennis were owned by the Citybus (Hong Kong). The Trident were bodied with Duple Metsec DM5000 bus specification (#10104), Duple Metsec DM5000 luxury coach specification (#10105), and the Walter Alexander ALX500 bus specification (#10106). The buses started to deliver to Hong Kong on September 1997.

Other than the standard 12-metre version of Trident, Dennis also built the 10.6-metre version in 1998. The first two chassis were sent to Duple Metsec for building the DM5000 bodywork, one is single-doorways and the another one is dual-doorways in specification. The single-doorways 10.6m Trident was delivered to Hong Kong on October 1998 and took parts in the UITP Exhibition with its Citybus standard livery. In the mean time, the another Trident 10.6m bodied DM5000 prototype was stayed in UK as a demonstrator. Finally the bus was acquired by New World First Bus in 2000.
