Dennis Trident prototype for Kowloon Motor Bus

In the early 1997, Dennis Specialist Vehicles produced first batch of super low floor buses chassis and sent totally three of them to Walter Alexander for building the new ALX500 bodywork. One of them is for Citybus and the others are for Kowloon Motor Bus.

After the bodywork were built-up, the two Dennis Trident prototypes for KMB were painted in KMB's standard white livery. Afterward, one of them (#10103) was being retained in UK for testing while the other one (#10102) was on delivery to Hong Kong immediately.

On May 1997, the first Dennis Trident for HK was being delivered. KMB then repainted with golden livery with red stripe for promotion of the new buses, and also fleeted the bus as ATR1 with registration number HJ2127. After tested the bus for several month, it was then put into services in route 1A serving between Sau Mau Ping (Central) and Tsim Sha Tsui (Star Ferry) on November 17, 1997.

While the ATR1 served in HK for more then half year, the another Trident prototype was delivered to HK in the mid of 1998 together with its standard white livery. KMB also repainted the bus with golden livery and then registered as HZ6751 with fleet number ATR101.

The major differences of the Trident prototype and the production type can be found on the location of the rear door, staircase panel on the offside and the location of the registration plate on the rear side. In the production type, the rear door is moved backward so as to re-locate the wheelchair position on between the first axle and the rear door. The staircase panel is changed into matt black glazing instead of aluminum sheet. And the registration plate on the rear side is also moved near the route displayer.
